4 questions with Liz Mosley

We started a little series where we ask our Mimi Coaches some creative questions. And today, we’re sharing Liz’s answers - they’re insightful! If you want to book a coaching session with her, follow this link.

You've supported creatives and business owners through your podcast for a while now, so how does it feel to dip your toe into coaching?

Honestly I’m really excited about it! A few people over the years have asked me if I offer coaching or mentoring, and it’s something I’ve thought about but never taken the leap to try (until now). It’s something that I’ve thought I would really enjoy and I feel like after 18 years working as a designer and 10 of those years working for myself I’ve learnt a lot and have a lot of wisdom and experience to share! I’ve already done one session and was absolutely buzzing afterwards!

What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone struggling in the creative industry?

My advice would be find ways to make it fun, and find opportunities to play. Running your own business can be really difficult but if you can find ways to pursue the joy and the fun in a creative career and life then it makes it much easier to keep showing up and keep going, and other people will enjoy it too! It could be a passion project that you start, a content series that you love editing, learning new skills, or attending events. There are so many different ways to keep things fresh and interesting so find a way that works for you. For me it was starting a podcast, and honestly at the start I just did it as I was curious to see if I enjoyed it (I did) and now it has become a core aspect of my business that I love, that makes me money and that still brings me a lot of joy. The fun aspect of the podcasting is what has kept me going for over 5 years now with it!

What would you say to someone who has a hard time showing up online?

I think showing up online is so much easier to do if you can find a format of content that you actually enjoy making. Maybe you go all in on carousels, maybe quick talking to camera reels are easiest for you. Find a format you actually enjoy and then focus on that for a while. I think also sometimes we just have to accept that it will feel a bit uncomfortable for a bit - but ultimately you need to ask yourself, what is the cost of not showing up online. Maybe it’s not being able to get clients because you’re not marketing yourself effectively, maybe it’s not getting the opportunities that you want, because people don’t know enough about you. I think if you get clear on your purpose and your why, it will be much easier to show up online because you know why you’re doing it and what the bigger goal you’re working towards is.

Name 3 tools you can't live without when it comes to running your business...

Oh my goodness there are quite a lot of tools now that I use that help me run my business but here are my top three:

Adobe Express: Whilst for my day to day design work I always use the other tools in the Creative Cloud ecosystem, I use Adobe Express to make quick and easy social media graphics which help me to stay consistent and visible with my content. I also use the scheduler in Adobe Express a lot to plan out my content and get everything scheduled as I would absolutely forget to post otherwise!

Flodesk: When I started my own business I didn’t love email marketing at all, but when I discovered Flodesk it genuinely changed everything for me. I found It so intuitive and simple to use, and all the templates and designs looked beautiful (which obviously is important to me as a designer). It really helped me to start growing my list and emailing it consistently and as a result it became a great marketing tool that actually made me money. They have added so many brilliant features since I joined when it was in beta too, so it just keeps getting better and better.

The notes app on my phone: Honestly this is so basic, but I’ve included it as a reminder that sometimes, just the basic free tools you already have can work the best. I have a running to do list in my notes app and it keeps me on track every day with what needs to get done in my business. I check it multiple times a day and just have a running list of what I need to do each week. Simple.
